I want to share my opinion about "Suzume", a movie that came to Dominican cinemas thanks to a miracle of God and the tireless effort of cultural advocates like Leorian Ricardo.
It's no secret that Japanese animated films are just starting to arrive in the country's cinemas. Even when they do, they are usually movies based on the most popular shonen anime of the moment.
Despite everything, after watching "Suzume", I can tell you without fear that the effort to bring it to the country was worth it. "Suzume" connected with me in such a personal way that I can't wait to see it again. From its impressive animation to its immersive story, I have no way of expressing with words that do justice to what I felt, but I assure you that I will do my best.
What is Suzume about?
Suzume no Tojimari" follows Suzume, a teenager with the ability to see supernatural forces that others cannot. When she meets a mysterious young man, she realizes that her country is in danger and embarks on a mission to save it. Now, it's up to her to close the mysterious doors that are spreading chaos throughout Japan.
Makoto Shinkai's recipe for connecting with the audience
After "Your Name" became one of the most successful anime movies worldwide, Makoto Shinkai decided to continue connecting with international audiences through romance.
His movies may seem simple compared to any of Ghibli's hits, but it's precisely focusing on creating works that are accessible to the general public that has helped him get this far.
But let's not confuse "simple" or "accessible" with lack of depth, because it's precisely in "Suzume", his latest success, where we can find the depth that intellectuals seek and the accessibility that the general public seeks converging in a single movie.
In simple words, you can enjoy Suzume regardless of whether you're a film expert or not, but if you decide to delve deeper into the themes and mysteries hidden in this gem, you will find a new wonder every time you watch it.
The magical realism of Makoto Shinkai
I found it so fascinating how Shinkai uses fantastical elements to create a poetic and dreamlike atmosphere that reminded me of the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Both authors masterfully fuse the everyday with the extraordinary, the real with the imaginary, and the tangible with the intangible.
What I like most about Makoto Shinkai is that he doesn't get bogged down in a complex or excessive explanation of the supernatural aspects of his characters' world. Instead, he uses subtlety to show rather than tell, making everyday and otherworldly elements organically integrated. In this way, he fully exploits the visual capabilities of the medium and creates a unique and unforgettable cinematographic experience.
Why should I watch Suzume?
Watching "Suzume" in the cinema is a unique experience that allows you to enjoy Japanese animation on a giant screen with immersive sound that will transport you to the world of the movie. Therefore, I recommend any anime or good cinema lover not to miss the opportunity to see "Suzume" in the cinema and be carried away by its magic and poetry.
